March Jr High Adventure – Trans-Catalina Trail

Posted on Jan 22 2025 - 8:10pm

Event Details:

Trans-Catalina Trail Backpacking

Overview:

Jr High Adventure: This is a Jr. High Adventure trip and all scouts attending must have earned their First Class rank prior to attending the campout.

Registration: This trip requires permits with campsite registrations. There is space for 15 attendees, 3 slots reserved for adults and 12 slots for scouts. Please only register if you know you will attend. We have had a large drop-out rate for this trip in the past, many at the last minute, which prevented other scouts from attending. Registration closes February 28th.

Where: Catalina Island

Backpack along the coast and through the interior of Catalina Island along the Trans-Catalina Trail, staying at Little Harbor and Black Jack campgrounds. Along the way you may share the trail with buffalo and eat cookies at Airport in the Sky. We will backpack from Two Harbors to Avalon in 3 days, catching the late boat from Avalon.

This trip is not for first time backpackers. The Trans-Catalina Trail is difficult in some sections, steep climbs with few to no switchbacks, and little shade. We will backpack 6 to 10 miles each day.

Departure:

We plan to meet at Big Lots Parking lot on Saturday, March 15 at 6:00 am and depart by 6:15 am sharp (be there or be left behind); we can’t miss our boat. Please eat breakfast before you arrive.

Arrival back in Tustin:

Monday March 17th, 10 PM at Big Lots Parking Lot, depending on the Catalina Ferry. The boys will call from the cars when we are close.

Driving/Transportation:

We will depart for Catalina from San Pedro and return into Long Beach and will need some volunteer drivers to drop off and pick up at the ports. This will keep us from paying some hefty parking fees and leaving vehicles in a sketchy parking lot.

Class A uniform:

Scouts should wear their Class A uniform (including Troop 235 cap) for travel. We change into backpacking clothes for the trail in Two Harbors

What to bring:

The weather could be anywhere from cool and sunny to rainy and cold. Be prepared for all types of weather. In addition to the normal items to bring on a campout, please bring the following:

• Sleeping bag

• Sleeping pad

• 10 Essentials + 4

• Toiletries

• Two Water bottles (total needs to be at least 2 L)
